Building a Better Way...The Long Forum

Despite the rain and cold weather the past couple of months, The Long Forum is on schedule.  When you enter the front of our campus and view the construction site, structural steel is being erected and the building is beginning to take shape.

One of the initiatives of this project from the onset was to incorporate principles for design, construction and operation for sustainable green buildings through the Leed (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System.  Read more...

Oxendine Reports on Georgia's Storm Damage - Calls Students to Action

In the immediate aftermath of the weekend storms that hit Georgia, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine spoke to GAC Junior High and Senior High students about the tornado damage that plowed through Georgia.  “All of us have been told that there is a God who loves us….I saw THAT God this weekend,” said Mr. Oxendine.   Read more...

20th Annual Dwight Love Math Tournament at GAC

The Dwight Love Math Tournament was held on the GAC campus, Saturday, March 15th.  This annual tournament is dedicated in memory of the life-long work of Dr. Dwight Love, a beloved math teacher at GAC who passed away in 2001.  This year the tournament celebrated a very special 20th anniversary.    Read more...

Jimmy Chupp Recognized at State Capitol

On March 19th, former GAC head football coach, Jimmy Chupp, was invited to the Georgia State Capitol.  During the legislative council session he was presented with a Resolution of Appreciation for his outstanding commitment to coaching in Georgia. An Opportunity to Get Ahead

GAC is offering two courses in summer school 2008.  Senior High students will have an opportunity to take the first semester of World History or the first semester of US History beginning in June.   In the summer of 2009, students can take the second semester of World History or US History.   Read more...

Spanish Teachers Plan Trip to Spain

Spanish teachers Melaney Cost and Lana Garner, working with Dr. Spiceland, have planned a tour of Spain for May 27-June 4, 2009.  All GAC students, families, and friends are welcome.  You do not have to be a Spanish student or speak Spanish to be a part of the trip.  This tour is a part of the Study Abroad program at GAC, so students can earn elective credit for this trip.    Read more...

Taking Care of Your Child - Taking Care of All of the Children

When I walk the halls in the morning, I am greeted mostly by smiles, grins, the “cool nod”, and now and then even a hug.  Every day the issues of individual children cross my path.  Whether it is a classroom issue or a heart issue, it is my job to look at each and every child as an individual.

A National Junior Honor Society Call to Leadership

On Thursday, February 28, the GAC Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society held its formal induction ceremony for new members.  Brittany Arnold (pictured), President of the GAC Chapter of NJHS, spoke regarding leadership - its responsibilities, challenges and opportunities.  Brittany referenced author and leadership expert John Maxwell, saying, “‘True leaders don’t only know and go the way, but they are required to show the way, which I believe means to help others become leaders also’.”   Read more...


Experiential Social Studies

Students in the 4th grade recreated pioneer life as part of an “experiential” social studies project.  Children in the 1800s played with what they could find to make into toys; hopscotch etched into the dirt, pick-up sticks made from straw, or using tin plates as punch art.  Dolls were hand-crafted from cornhusks.  Quilting and basket weaving were necessary tasks of the day, rather than hobbies one enrolls in after school.  Read more...

 


Adapting to Students' Interest

Differentiated instruction is a teaching philosophy based on the premise teachers should adapt instruction to student differences, according to author Carol Ann Tomlinson in her book The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners.   Read more...

 


GAC #1 in Georgia for Jump Rope for Heart

If you didn’t have a rope in hand, you missed the fun!  Single jumpers, double jumpers, three at a time, GAC students were jumping for the heart and from the heart.  Each year, Elementary students at GAC participate in Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.  Read more...
