Dodge Ball Aids Romanian Children
Jill Morris, Director of Community Relations
Dumitru and Ana Zlati, from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, along with 14 adopted children, have an extra $1000, thanks to the donations of Senior High students inspired by the hardship of children in a foreign land. The dodge ball tournament brought almost every Senior High student and available faculty member to the Bradford Gym one Thursday morning.
Paying $20 a team, students could enter the tournament and 13 teams signed on to play. For just $2, students could watch and cheer for their favorite teams. As a final reward, the winning team faced the faculty team in a “grueling” shutout.
The team who called themselves, “BB” surfaced as the winners of the tournament, by defeating “The League”. The GAC faculty team then confidently walked onto the court ready to face their opponents. Yet, one by one, teachers were eliminated. Mr. Ball was hit by Chris Thomas’ throw. “Out,” shouted the crowd. Next, Mr. Wilson was out, then Mr. Baker. Mr. Bendickson and Mr. Beasley jumped to avoid the flying throws. Ms. Wiedeman dodged a few. Mr. Cline fought hard. Finally, only Mr. Lane stood against seven excited students. In two more attempts, “BB” became dodge ball champions.
Following the match, students exited the gym with heads held high. Relationships between teachers and students
were strengthened, fun was had by all, and a family on the other side of the globe was the benefactor. More clothes and toys for this family were collected by the Interact Club sponsored by Mr. Tymchuk.
At a time when Romania has closed its doors to outside adoptions, many Romanian children roam the streets unloved, uneducated and undernourished. GAC students were touched and blessed by the opportunity to reach out to the Zlati family and make a difference.
The mission of Greater Atlanta Christian School is help each student grow as Jesus did, in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
